First things first, you need to know what product or products you will sell. And how will you fulfill orders? Will it be dropshipping or print-on-demand? You won’t need any inventory with either option. With dropshipping, you’re the middleman, and Shopify will automatically forward the order to the manufacturer, meaning the manufacturer will ship the product. With print-on-demand, you design and create mockups, but the product won’t ship until the order is placed. The producer will ship directly to your customer on demand. Shopify makes either way easy.

The Shopify dashboard is where you can set up products, manage your business, and create collections, promotions, and discounts. It’s also where you manage your orders and set up automated email sequences for emails to your customers. Building relationships with your customers has the added advantage of potentially leading to repeat sales and referrals. Give your customers a reminder to buy again by keeping in touch.

How to Start a Shopify Store:

Product Sourcing:

  • Dropshipping vs. holding inventory makes a big difference and saves you a lot of time and resources, such as warehouse space to store inventory and time and supplies shipping items. You can literally leave all that to the supplier, who already has all this in-house.
  • Finding reliable suppliers needs to be set up early on, and you should know as much about them as you can learn. You want to look for any scams or negative comments and read those to make sure the source supplier isn’t creating low-quality products.
  • Product quality and fulfillment times. Order samples and ask for the history of their returns and shipment time averages. You are looking for a supplier with a good reputation and track record of quality customer experiences, so vet your sources before doing business. Taking the extra time before getting started will also help you determine your niche.

Setting the Foundation

1. Choose the Right Niche:

  • Your niche selection is important, so do your research and choose wisely.
  • Start by identifying your passions and interests. Pick products that are related.
  • Research market demand and competition and look at your competitors’ websites.

Use tools like Google Trends to look for things that are trending. If you want to make money on Shopify, you need to choose a profitable category with items you know will sell. You can search for “high search volume with low competition.” But sometimes it’s good to be in high competition as long as you have a product that can stand out. Weigh your options.

2. Set Up Your Shopify Store:

  • Register a domain name that’s catchy and easy to brand.
  • Select a visually appealing theme.
  • Customizing your store’s appearance and branding.

3. Optimizing User Experience:

  • Create a user-friendly navigation structure.
  • Make sure the site is mobile optimized.
  • Create fast-loading pages.
  • Upload clear product descriptions and images.

Once you have established your store, you will need to get down to business; that is, selling your products. I would hope you already know where you are sourcing them before getting set up. The sourcing will be part of the initial business plan. Make sure to maintain good relationships with your sources.

Selling Products

1. Product Listings:

  • Write compelling product titles and descriptions for the items on your site.
  • Use high-quality product images and videos.
  • Use pricing strategies and competitive analysis to determine your price.

2. Inventory Management:

  • Inventory tracking and management applications can help; do some research about what’s available.
  • Avoid stockouts and overstocking–this is something you should discuss with the supplier ahead of time.
  • Product bundling and upselling. Put similar products together and set up automated emails to follow up with information about products that go well with what your customers have already purchased. You can also recommend products that are similar under the product the way Amazon does it.

Marketing and Promotion

1. Content Marketing:

  • Creating valuable blog posts and articles about using the products.
  • Email marketing campaigns are set up to follow up on items they bought or didn’t buy.
  • Social media content strategies asking customers to share posts of themselves using the product. Give them coupons and freebies for sharing your products on their social media accounts.

2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

  • Optimizing product listings for search engines by using keywords that aren’t overly saturated. Over 10,000, but under a million should do the trick.
  • Build high-quality backlinks to reputable companies so that Google algorithms identify that you’re reputable.
  • Monitor and improve site speed; this should be considered every time you add additional content to your website.

3. Paid Advertising:

  • Google Ads and Facebook Ads need to be researched well before spending. Sometimes, it makes sense; sometimes, it doesn’t. Do your research.
  • Budget allocation and targeting should be part of your business plan.
  • A/B testing and optimization for best performance. If you are stuck, hire a consultant or company who can help. But get everything else done first. That way, you can maximize your impact.

Building Customer Trust

Customer Reviews and Social Proof are going to be very important for building customer trust and loyalty. Encourage your customers to leave reviews and testimonials. Apply for and display trust badges and seals as soon as you can. Make sure you have a transparent return policy on your FAQ page and frequently asked questions under products.

Customer Support

Customer support is going to be very important, especially in the beginning. You need to offer multiple contact channels within your store, social media, and website. Make sure to be prompt and friendly when responding to inquiries. Quickly handle customer complaints effectively and offer what you can to make the situation right.

Secure Payment Options

Make sure to set up trusted, secure payment gateways.

  • SSL certificates and data security are required; add it to your budget.
  • PCI compliance and whatever other requirements are for contacting customers in the country where you do business. You can contact security service providers to ask them questions about what’s required. Act like a customer and find out what’s needed. Then, do your research based on what they tell you and determine what services you will need that match your budget.

Scaling and Expanding

1. Analytics and Performance Tracking:

  • Use Shopify analytics tools.
  • Identify your key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Identify your growth opportunities.

2. Scaling Your Business:

  • Expand your product lines as you see growth, use momentum to keep growing.
  • Add a new sales channel (e.g., Amazon, eBay).
  • Consider international expansion, where possible; do your research beforehand and check with your supplier.

3. Outsourcing and Delegation:

  • Hire virtual assistants and freelancers.
  • Focus on the tasks that generate the most revenue.

Shopify offers an incredible platform for e-commerce success, but it takes dedication and strategic planning to make money online. Remember that building a profitable business on Shopify is a journey, not an overnight success. Stay informed, adapt to market changes, and never stop learning to achieve long-term success in e-commerce.

Your Website

The About Us page is not about you; it’s about your customers and how they will use your product as the hero. You’re the helper, not the hero. You need to get your customers to see themselves using your product, recommending your product as the hero of the story.

The frequently asked questions (FAQ) page should cover all possible questions and answers you can think of. Make your life easier by having everything covered in your FAQ page. If your customers don’t have to hunt you down for answers to their questions, they will feel more comfortable buying with you than with your competitors. A concise FAQ page makes your hero feel they can trust you already have whatever it is covered.

Shopify Beginner Mistakes

You’ll lose out on sales every day if you’re missing a clear message of what you’re selling and why your hero (your customer) needs to buy from you on your home page. The main image on your homepage has a job, and that job is to tell people what you sell and how it can improve their lives.

The homepage design without a hero banner is a major mistake. Create a hero banner that highlights your customer as the hero of the website, and you are their Yoda there to help them win. Create a Hero banner as part of your setup.

Sometimes, I’ve landed on a website and can’t determine what they sell. That website has no purpose. Make sure your product and message are clear throughout the site, especially the most viewed pages.

Always end each page and each product listing with the action step: to buy. If you don’t tell your customers what to do, they’ll do nothing.

A Compelling Ecommerce Call to Action (CTA)

CTA is going to direct people to the products you’re promoting. You need a hook that they can self-identify with.

No social proof → you’re not going to be making money.

No clear navigation → you’re not making money.

There are too many single-product listings. → You’re not going to be making money.

Product listings need to be completed with details and CTA.

Personally, I haven’t tried making money online with Shopify, but I know people who have, and they enjoy various ways of using the platform.
