There are things you can do today to make more money now. You can work extra jobs or hours, you can invest, you can create a product or service, you can even sell what you own. Or you can start some daily improvements that will produce more money by following what others who are savvy money managers are doing today.
Change Jobs
The best thing an employed person can do to make more money immediately is to change jobs. Do some research on what the best paid positions are within your industry, and then choose the best paid position that you would enjoy most. Determine what you would need to do to get to that position. Who works in those positions today within your company? Are they people you know, or could know? Meet them and ask about their experience; how did they choose that role, how did they get there, and how long did it take? Put those actions into motion while you have your current job, and then once you fully understand the role and responsibilities and have completed the necessary requirements, then look for those positions and apply. Use what you have learned to create a fantastic introduction, and be sure to add your extra experience from working within other areas of the industry. Stay focused on the highest value for the work you do.
Get Married
Married people, on average, make more money. There are several opinions surrounding why this is, especially for men who can make significantly more than single men. The statistics show that married men work more, there is a higher level of drive for advancement due to more responsibility, and there is more time for focused work when people aren’t distracted by the ups and downs of dating.
My personal opinion highlighted clearly in the 1997 movie “Picture Perfect”; it comes down to forced loyalty. At a party, the boss is surrounded by his management team. He tells Jennifer Aniston’s character that he can’t promote her because he doesn’t want her taking his clients away. He argues that she has nothing tying herself to his company, she doesn’t need her job, she can just leave. He discloses that other managers have expensive cars and mortgages to pay, they can’t leave the company with key clients, they have responsibilities that force loyalty. Conversely, a married man is more likely to stay in his work role at the same company out of the need for security and stability for his family. He then may advance through positions in that same company.
Participate in Focus Groups
What I like about focus groups is the networking. If you’re in product development, you want to develop a product in the future, or you like being at the forefront of innovation, then this can be a lot of fun. It’s also a fantastic way to get to know people. Schlesingergroup and Toluna are companies that pay users to share opinions in two different ways. Usertesting pays users to try out products where users help companies be user centric. This can be a great way to earn a little income on the side.
Invest in Dividend Stocks
Buy stocks that pay dividends. Make sure that the companies are priced at a reasonable rate, and buy what you can afford every month for a yearly payment. Over the years, these small yearly payments will add up. For added value and compounding interest, reinvest the dividends. You can usually set your investments to do this automatically through your brokerage.
Freelance on Fiverr
Market your skills and talents on Fiverr for an extra side-hustle. There is a story of a young woman who increased her income to $378K doing this. CNBC “Make It” on YouTube shared the story of Alex who writes on Fiverr full time. She realized she’s capable of making money on her own by freelancing, which motivated her to keep pushing to work more. She worked very hard for a year getting herself to be ranked number two. If you have a skill that adds value and others will pay for, freelance on Fiverr. It’s a great place to starting your own business. Eventually, you can then hire others, train them to also do what you do, and then have them working for the clients you have acquired over time.
Secret Shopping
Do you love to shop? Look for some secret shopping gigs to do what you love while helping retail stores keep their customer service up to par. Field Agent is an application via which users can arrange mystery shopping connections.
